The End

Throughout the semester, this oceanography course has the aspect of geology and physic. This is the obvious part is the physics, the physics has been part of the Earth for centuries, believe it or not it is the ocean itself has physics. There has always been a curiosity to find out what is in the ocean and how did it become the way it is today, that curiosity has always been in almost everyone. Sometimes more people have more curiosity than others do. There has been explorers, whether it was to find a new way to get to China or to find a glow in the dark fish that lives miles in the ocean. People are willing to risk their lives to discover, it can be divers or explorers, like Columbus and Darwin. Many explorers and many divers male and female. The human curiosity had lead humans to the desire of wanting to discover what was deep in the waters, but there is one problem, that is lack of air in the water. The scuba suit was just an improvement from the metal head it was before. The scaba equipment is also an improvement to what it was before. Even now there is no finished producted. Inventions have always been part of everyones’ life. There is the invention of the compass, maps that had led us to the way new technology is today like the GPS. Has there ever been a thought in your mind about how a hurricane is trace and what path might it take? Wella s part oft he semester course, we had learned about how hurricanes were tracked and depending on the hurricane, it will depend on the path that the hurricane will take. It can only take a few hours for a hurricane to hit land and travel its path. This was not surprising to me, I already knew this could happen with a hurricane and I have seen it happen right before the hurricane became stronger. Measuring tides that all has to depend on the ocean floor and how it is made. It also depends on the moon, the ocean is effected by the moon during high tides and low tides, this is due tot he position of the moon. There is no such thing as cold or being cold, only being less warm or less warm. The water can have a low temperature, but a high density. The further down someone goes in the ocean, the more dense and cooler the water becomes than it is up on the surface. The continent had broken apart or separated due to the plate tectonics. There is a theory that the earths crust has six large plates that always moves along the earths crust. Another theory where there are cracks in the seafloor and magma pours out and then cools, making the new crust which slowly pushes away the old crust, making the seafloor larger. We had also learned about Bathymetric mapping, seafloor features are mapped by using sonar/sound. The sound bounces off the seafloor. At the rate that at it comes back and shows what the seafloors look like. The seafloor maps are mainly used as a navigation tool in the ocean in a way so almost no one hits a ridge or goes over a section where magma might be flowing out or hits any danger. Everything that we had done, every assignment, every blogger, they were all different compared to the one before that. The homework was either to type a blog or answer the chapter questions. The class assignments are not always hands on sadly, they were to take notes, do the assignment that was handed out, but when they were hands on, there were always worksheets that had to be filled out before, during or after the hands on work. The hands on work always had some kind of reading to go with it that was required to read before doing anything. The blogs were never the same either, they were either about our opinion or about what the last class assignment was and some more questions to go with it. Not all work can be fun, we all have to do work. If my mind did not work how it was and was able to work in a better way, I would probably already have gone scuba diving by now, if I saw what divers saw than I would probably have a different idea on the ocean and how it looks and would want to discover it like I want to discover the world.  If I had a better understanding on the ocean, I could think better and have an idea on how to help the world. I also know how the hurricanes form when one formed in front of the highway, but I also know how they trace hurricanes. I know how salitany and denity work. I do not always know my strengths and weaknesses, when they constantly change.  My strengths is any activity that gets my hands involved, but the weakness is that I cannot write it does not help me remember things as easy as activities do. My strength is also drawing, electronics like when we use blogger, and something happens to the computer most of the time I know what to do and how to fix it. The problem with strengths is that with every strength comes a weakness. When I draw for any of my classes, I will not be able to draw something for that class and will have to think harder and it will not turn out the way I wanted it to turn out. With electronics the problem is the electronics cannot be fixed or that if the electronic cannot be fixed than I cannot do what I need to be done. These are only some examples of what I can do for my classes and how they come in handy. Throughout the semester, I have learn an aspect of physics of the ocean.

Trade winds

The Earth is on an axis allowing only 50% of sunlight to reach the Earth. The equator receives the most sunlight throughout the year. While the north and south receive different amounts of sunlight during the year. The global wind patterns all depends on the way the Earth moves. The Earth moves to the right so the wind patterns move to the left in a circular rotation.   The Earth moves to the right while the air and water move to the left. The activity that we had done in class poking a small hole in the middle of the round paper circle and spinning it to the right on a thin strong metal tool. While dropping little drops of water on to it shows that the water moves to the left. Even though the paper circle was spinning to the right. Coriolis means a effect mass moving in the rotating system experiences a force and Hadley cells means large scale cell in which air rises at the equator. With the way the Earth is on its axis there is more sunlight found at 30 degrees north and south latitude. The wind patterns all go in a circular motion starting from the left. The trade winds, doldrums, horse latitudes, and westerlies. The global wind patterns activity that we had done in class was if someone spins a beach ball globe and a dry erase marker. Put the marker at the top at the globe and try to draw a straight line to the left all the way to the bottom of the globe, while another person is spinning the globe to the right. It is shorter to go from New York to California than it is to go to California to New York. The westerlies go into a circle with the trade winds.
Due to global warming, the winds with shift more towards the equator.

Loggerhead Island Report

1. What special considerations did you have to make for the nesting sea turtle sites located on the barrier island?
We had to make sure that no lights, no people, and no loud sounds near the nests.

2. What special considerations had to be made when determining a good site for the proposed fishing pier?
The no wild life was being harmed like the turtles, but also keeping them away from the boats so that the fish wouldn't be scared away.

3. What could be some of the potential problems that might arise from the proposed golf course? Propose some of the ways in which the impacts can be reduced.
If the golf course is on the water there could be flooding, and also if it's near the habitat it could bother the wild life.

4. What are the economic benefits to the community of Loggerhead County if the development was done with the least amount of environmental impact?
There would be an increase of wild life, there would also be less gases in the air allowing more money to go towards the county without harming the wild life.

5. Describe three ways in which humans negatively impact coastal ecosystems such as the one you are working on with Loggerhead Barrier Island.
-boats produce gases that will go into the ocean effecting the animals.
-the fishing docks can take away the fish that is food for other animals
-the golf balls can end up in the ocean

6. How can maintaining natural vegetation help us to reduce the damage caused by oceanic events such as hurricanes, tsunami and continued beach erosion?
Everything would be all natural

7. After listening to the other groups make their presentations, were there any ideas they had you would have used if you had though about it before-hand? You should list at least three different ideas and indicate why their idea is actually better for the environment than yours.
No, many people did not put things in the right places.

How can ocean floor features be measured and mapped using current acoustical technology? How can ocean floor maps be used in the commercial, military, and/or private sector? With the current technology that we have today we are provided with information on how the ocean floor may look. A piece of equipment that is used out in the ocean to measure the ocean floor is the sonar stick, this sonar stick is has sound to it and once it hits the bottom of the ocean floor it sends up a sound. Ocean floor maps can help with many situations, with the military like a submarine, it let's us know how far we are to the ocean floor and where the enemy is. Having the ocean floor mapped out allows us to go discover what is there and watch out for dangerous courses ahead.  On the image below it lists some of the objects it lists is the continental shelf, mid-ocean ridge and the trench.

Sand

Sand is one of the many materials that have been appart of this planet for many years. In class, we have discovered the true size, color, and material of sand. There were eight different sands to be disvovered, Maui, Cancun in Mexico, the Bahamahs, Key West, Hampton Beach in New Hampshire, Dessert Island, Plum Island, and Klamath in California. There have been differences to each one no eveyone of them was the same. There are also similatities like some beaches were either clear/white/brown or had a mix, five of those beaches were rough and three of them were smooth. Maui and Hampton Beach are two different kinds of beaches and both are located in different places. Hampton Beach is in New Hampshire while Maui is located in the area of the Gulf of Mexico. Maui sand is really rocks and they are brown and smooth. Hampton Beach is white and somewhat clear with a rough texture, it also has more of a crystal look to it. it was clear to see what was the differences and the similarities after gathering the data.

your thoughts on the effects of the molasses spill (How should people respond to this? Could this have been prepared for? What should be done next?
The company should have had something protect the molasses from spilling into the river, ocean, or lake to prevent any animals from dying and to prevent the company costing any money for the clean up. This would save the animals from dying and save the company from a lot of money costs. If the company had fixed the problem before there was ever a problem there might have not been a drop in costs for them. The animals need their habitat just like we need ours with no reaction the company did not even do anything to help these animals. It is not just the company People responds should be how to get the molasses out and how to get it out fast.

Oceanography explorers

The ocean has not been completely discovered yet not even today due to how large the Earth is and how large the ocean is that we still have not found places. When explorers were beginning there is more to this Earth than just one side, there is more land there is so much sea. The weather for the ocean acts differently than it does on land, when the ocean comes towards land the waves get higher and there are more birds found.Having the ocean is a great part of everyday life of all living things and so having the ocean as another resource is what helps living things this allows it to make the Earth habitable.

With what the ocean gives to the ecosystems it allows us to survive among the land or when we are out at sea. Humans have always been connected to the ocean in some way if it was to know what was on the other side of the Earth, just to take a fishing trip, or even just to go swimming with the fishes, that is just how simple it is. The ocean is unexplored till even today, we still have a lot to explore and figure out what is still out there.
